A quarter of Democrats who supported City Council Speaker Christine Quinn in the primary election, and 17% of Democrats who backed second-place primary finisher Bill Thompson, plan to vote for Republican Joe Lhota in the November general election, according to a poll of likely voters obtained by The Insider.
The poll was conducted by Penn Schoen Berland on behalf of advocacy organization Transportation Alternatives who polled 875 likely voters from September 11-18, including 644 people from both parties who voted in the Sept. 10 primary and 544 “triple prime” voters who vote in every special, primary and general elections.
While most of Ms. Quinn’s supporters are backing Mr. de Blasio, as are 60% of Mr. Thompson’s supporters, Ms. Quinn’s hardcore supporters appear more inclined to back Mr. Lhota.
For Mr. Lhota’s camp the poll numbers, that still show their candidate losing by 40 points to Bill de Blasio, underscore their campaign’s crossover appeal.
“We are confident that once independents and moderate Democrats learn more about Bill’s plans that will explode the budget, make us less safe and drive jobs out of the city, they will undoubtedly reject his radical candidacy,” a spokeswoman said. “Joe is an experienced and tested leader who has the right vision to create good-paying jobs, reform our school system and continue the crime reduction that allowed our economy and population to grow. This city has a proud tradition of electing strong, independent mayors and Joe’s message is one that will appeal to all New Yorkers, regardless of political affiliation.”
“Just as any candidate for mayor needs an education policy and a housing policy, if Joe Lhota wants to be competitive in this race, he needs to articulate a transportation and street safety plan,” said Noah Budnick, deputy director of Transportation Alternatives. “De Blasio took our candidate survey, and our 100,000 supporters are waiting for Joe Lhota to fill out the survey for our voter guide.”
